Note: This writing was pre-written to keep things active on my blog. I’m still recovering from my surgery. Thank you for being here while I rest.
My birthday is on the 17th and I’m still taking things slowly after my surgery so I decided to share this with anyone who wants to celebrate their birthday with their cat soulmate(s).
5 Unique Things You Can Do with Your Cat on Your Birthday
Apart from the cutting of the birthday cake and blowing the candles, most people tend to spend their day in the usual ways — phone calls, social media messages or maybe a dinner with friends. Yet, birthdays do not always have to follow the same pattern every year. If you are someone who finds comfort in quiet rituals and companionship rather than noise and fuss, your cat can become the best part of your celebration. Cats might not know it is your birthday, yet their presence makes the day softer, funnier and strangely more magical.
These are five unique ways you can include them while making the day feel truly yours.
1. Begin the Day Slowly with Cat Energy
Instead of rushing into messages or calls, stay in bed longer and let your cat climb beside you. Watch them stretch, paw at the blankets or curl into your side while you sip your morning tea or coffee. A simple grooming session or cuddle in the morning can feel grounding, almost like an unspoken promise between you and your pet. Beginning the day this way shifts the focus from stress to calm, reminding you that birthdays do not need to start in a hurry to feel meaningful.
2. Write Birthday Letters
Birthdays invite reflection. Take out a notebook and write a letter to yourself about where you are now, what you have learnt and what you hope for in the year ahead. Then, write one to your cat. It does not need to be serious; it can be filled with gratitude, humour, or even small details such as the way they wake you up or sit in your lap when you need comfort. If you want to take it further, write one from your cat to you. It could be cheeky, for example, “Please stop shutting the door while I am trying to supervise you in the bathroom human” or in a more affectionate way like, “Thank you for sharing the sunny window spot with me.” Keeping these letters in a small box or journal becomes a ritual you can revisit every birthday and it shows how your bond evolves over the years.
3. Roll Out Your Own Red Carpet at Home
Celebrations do not have to mean big outings. You can create your own “premiere night” in the comfort of your home. Choose a film you love or one you have been saving for the right occasion, then create a cosy set-up with blankets, cushions and your favourite snacks. Give your cat their own section with toys, treats or even a sprinkle of catnip so they feel part of the event. The whole evening becomes less about entertaining other people and more about indulging yourself, with your cat as the only guest who never overstays their welcome.
4. End the Day Stargazing Together
Rather than finishing your birthday with more cake or scrolling endlessly through messages, step outside or sit by the window with your cat close by. Wrap yourself in a blanket, breathe in the night air and look up at the stars. Cats are naturally curious about the outdoors and many will sit quietly as though they too are taking it all in. The stillness of the sky paired with your cat’s presence makes the moment feel bigger than any candle wish. It turns your birthday evening into something ritualistic, a quiet reminder of how small and yet how infinite life can feel.
5. Create a Shared Birthday Playlist
Music has a way of capturing moods and memories. Create a playlist for your birthday that includes songs that lift you, songs that remind you of meaningful moments and perhaps even tracks that prepare you for the year ahead. Between those, slip in softer instrumentals or nature sounds that your cat enjoys. Play it as background music during the day while opening messages or simply sitting with them. Over time, this playlist can become a tradition, updated each year, marking your birthday with both familiar songs and new ones. The sound of your cat purring nearby might end up being the most beautiful addition of all.
Ultimately, birthdays do not have to be extravagant to feel special. They are about creating moments that mean something to you, not about following what everyone else expects. Sharing your day with your cat adds warmth, laughter and comfort that no party could replace. They will not blow out candles with you, yet the way they curl into your side or steal the ribbon off your presents might just be the most memorable part of the celebration.
